Virgil Phillip Anderson

May 28, 1923 — August 12, 2016

Virgil Phillip Anderson passed away in his sleep at home on Friday, August 12, 2016 at the age of 93. He was born on May 28, 1923 in Ponca, Nebraska to Evelyne B. (Garvey) Anderson and Fred J. Anderson. He grew up on the family farm during the depression. After his father died and his mother had to sell the farm, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp and proudly served during World War II in the Second Marine Division in the South Pacific and in the occupation of Japan. Upon the conclusion of his military service, he briefly stayed with his namesake uncle, Phillip F. Garvey, an attorney in San Francisco. It was at that time he decided he would become a lawyer rather than return to farming. He returned to Nebraska to attend the University of Nebraska and Creighton University Law School. While attending law school and living with his aunt, he met and married Edna Pauline Pedersen, who lived across the street with her widowed mother. Upon graduation from law school, Virgil and Edna moved to San Francisco in 1951 so that he could practice law with his uncle. Subsequently, he joined the California State Automobile Association (AAA) where he served as an attorney and head of governmental affairs for 35 years until his retirement. In retirement, Virgil and Edna traveled extensively until her passing on December 24, 1995. Thereafter, Virgil continued to attend the sporting events of his grandchildren, traveled, held family gatherings at the Sutter Club, fished and played golf well into his 90s. Known for his graciousness and kind manner, Virgil was greatly devoted to his family and many friends. Virgil leaves his two children and their families. He leaves his son, Edward Virgil Anderson and his wife Kathleen of San Francisco and his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Hilary. He also leaves his daughter Janet Kay (Anderson) Nitschke and her husband Willys of Lodi and his granddaughters, Emily (and her husband Steven Rossi), Sarah (and her fiance Brandon Savage) and grandson Andrew. A U.S. Marine Corp military burial will be held at 9:30 AM on Thursday August 25, 2016 at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Boulevard, Sacramento, CA, followed by a memorial service at 11 AM at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1615 Morse Ave, Sacramento, CA.
