True Sylvester Hines

July 25, 1914 — October 24, 2015

True Sylvester Hines died at the age of 101 years old on October 24, 2015, surrounded by his grandchildren and daughter. True was strong and active until succumbing to complications from pneumonia but went home to the Lord beautifully after an epic life. A native of Muncie, Indiana, he was born July 25, 1914, to Jessie Pearl (Ross) Hines and William Sherman Hines. At a young age of 19, he rode the rails to California in hopes of making it on his own. In 1927, he was hired in Washington State to work for Henry Kaiser who undertook the building of the largest concrete dam in the world, Grand Coulee Dam. True became a foreman on the project and was later hand-picked by Kaiser to work as a welding foreman in the Richmond Shipyard during the Second World War. In 1939, he relocated to California to work on the Friant Dam in the San Joaquin Valley, where he met his future wife, Lorraine Anna Craveiro. True had dreams of meeting a ""Spanish Senorita"" in California and thought he had done just that in Lorraine. To his surprise though, Lorraine turned out to be Portuguese. Undaunted by this, True decided to pursue the beautiful maiden. They met at a local dance and were instantly drawn to one another. While dancing to Hoagy Carmichael's ""Stardust"" (They later opted to live in Carmichael because of this song), True held Lorraine close, and by the end of the dance he held her just a little closer. He was in love with her from that moment on. After the dance ended, True asked if he could give Lorraine a ride home. Noticing his motorcycle, she declined due to having been burned on the calf in childhood by her brother's motorcycle manifold. But True was persistent; he returned to the following week's dance with a new sedan, having sold his prized bike. On August 23, 1941, True and Lorraine secretly eloped to Reno, Nevada. True continued to work at the Shipyards and Lorraine worked as a registered nurse. In 1943 their son, William Sylvester, was born; and in 1945, their daughter, Madeline Marie was born. Towards the end of the war, True worked for the Blue Ribbon Coffee Company in San Francisco and was assigned to work as a northern California and Nevada Branch Manager out of Sacramento in 1945, at which time the family settled in Carmichael. Together, True and Lorraine were among the few first families to establish Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church Parish in Carmichael, whereby, True served as chairman of the Carmichael County Fair and Lorraine served as the first President of the Parish Woman's Council. Lorraine was a devout Catholic. True took her to mass faithfully - always going up for the blessing come communion time. It wasn't until the age of 96, 13 years after Lorraine's passing, that True said he wanted to make his first confession. Fr. George Snynder, then of St. Mel parish, was happy to make that house call. Upon his arrival, True shook the priest's hand with a big smile on his face and said ""Father. I'd like to join your organization."" True was given a conditional baptism and confirmed the following spring by Bishop Soto. He was a regular communicant until his death and frequently recited the prayer of Divine Mercy, ""Jesus, I trust in You."" True is survived by his six Grandchildren all of whom he enjoyed and loved dearly: Matthew Ross Hines, Eric Ramon Hines, John True Johnson, Jessie Lorraine Johnson, William Jeremiah Johnson, and Anna Marie Johnson. He is survived by eight Great Grandchildren who gave him great joy and daily company: Gabriel Perdue, Owen Johnson, Isaiah Perdue, Samuel Perdue, Melody Hines, William Johnson, Mary Johnson, and Baby Johnson to be born spring 2016.
