Spencer Harold Smith left his family just before 8 AM on Monday, October 30 in Carmichael, California. He lived a full 94 years, and his son and granddaughters – Lawrence H. Smith, Phoebe E. Smith, and Katherine M. Smith – are sad but joyful for him to be reunited with his wife, Mildred (Midge) Morgan Smith, who passed away in June. Spencer was born in 1923 to Howard Pinkney Smith and Minnie Lee Taylor of Hull, Texas, graduated from Hull-Daisetta High School, and married classmate Midge in 1942. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and graduated from Oregon State University afterward. Subsequently they lived in Mississippi, Atlanta, Washington, DC, and Denver during Spencer's career with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where he rose from field biologist to Director of the Service. Spencer lived a Christian life, serving as a deacon in several churches. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at Sierra View funeral home in Carmichael on Sunday, November 5 at 2 PM. A family graveside service with military honors will be held the following week at Guedry Cemetery in Batson, Texas.
