Roxine Elaine Doane

January 23, 1955 — February 27, 2024

Roxine Elaine Doane (née Potts), aged 69, passed away at home on February 26, 2024.Roxine was born on January 23, 1955 in North Platte, Nebraska. She spent most of her childhood living between Hayes Center, Nebraska and Salinas, California. After Roxine graduated from Alisal High School with honors in 1974, she went on to study Spanish and Math at Hartnell College, followed by U.C. Santa Barbara and San Jose State University. She worked as an associate at JCPenney to help pay her way through college.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and earning her Teaching Credential, Roxine began her teaching career. School had always been a happy place for her, where she felt safe. She loved working with her students and tried hard to make school a safe place for them, too. Throughout her career, she taught at Los Gatos High School, Dos Palos High School, Tenaya Middle School, and Cruikshank Middle School, and substitute taught at various other schools. She also spent time teaching English as a Second Language to adults.

In 1982, Roxine met her husband, Verlyn, at Dos Palos High School. They had a short courtship and married on May 21, 1983. They built their life in Merced, California, where they lived until 2022. Roxine and Verlyn had two daughters, Emily and Megan. Roxine loved being a mom and took time off from teaching to stay at home and raise her daughters.

In 2010, Roxine became too disabled to continue teaching. It was hard for her to say goodbye to the career that she loved, but she found joy in spending more time with her husband and family. She especially enjoyed being a grandma and cherished each of her four grandchildren. She was always ready to babysit and loved playing games, sharing meals, and visiting with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed various hobbies, including crocheting gifts for her family, writing, drawing, reading, and watching television (Coronation Street was a current favorite.) Roxine eventually became bedbound, but still tried to stay positive. She even managed to find some pleasure in her hospital stays by talking with and befriending the staff. She loved hearing about how family, friends (old and new), former students, and acquaintances were doing, and truly cared about them all.

Roxine was predeceased by her parents, Donald Eugene Potts and Dorothy Mae Potts (née Jones), her sisters, Roxie Haworth and Dorothy Juarez, and brother, Donald Potts, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Verlyn Walker Doane, her daughters, Emily Anne Hogan and Megan Elaine Doane, sons-in-law, Nicholas Lee Hogan and Kristopher Andrew Escobar, grandchildren, Lillian Cait Hogan, Lucas Walker Hogan, Oliver James Hogan, and Melanie Anne Hogan, and brother, George Lashley, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
