On October 27, 1950, Robert was born to David and Beverly Smith of Veblen, South Dakota. Bob graduated from Veblen High School in 1968 and went on to study drafting in Minnesota. That is where he met his future wife, Darlene. From that union, a sweet baby girl was born, Deserae Kathryn. The family returned to South Dakota, where Bob doted on his daughter and enjoyed showing off his "mini-me".
Later Bob moved to California and started a successful lawn and pest control company. With his partner, Mary Gaebe, he built a wonderful second phase of his life. They enjoyed traveling in his motor home and visiting friends and family all over California and the Midwest. Some of Bob's sweetest joys was helping his mom with her gardening, chatting, and camping with his siblings and families. He especially loved it when he could visit with his daughter, Deserae, and grandson, Ashton.
He was well loved by his family, friends, and customers.
Bob is survived by his partner Mary, grandson Ashton, brother Jerry Smith (Sheri), and sisters, Peggy Peterson, Kelly (Jon) Anderson, and Karen Thompson and their families. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved daughter Deserae and her little baby Isabella Grace.
Time and time again, those who knew Bob well would comment on his huge heart, funny personality, and strong work ethic. He was kind, sweet, and generous with his time and attention. We will miss his warm chuckle and his place at the table with his big mug of coffee.
A graveside ceremony shall be held at a later, and warmer, time in Veblen.
His remaining family and friends know there was an excited family reunion when he took his place with his passed loved ones when he arrived in heaven, March 24. 2023.
Rest in Peace, Bobby. You worked hard and the race is over. You will not be forgotten.
"Lovingly written by Darlene and Mary Gaebe's daughter, Sandy."
