Randy Laurance Steenburgen

September 13, 1949 — April 22, 2016

Passed away at age 66 on April 22, 2016 in Carmichael, California. Randy was born in Boise, Idaho on September 13, 1949. Randy was the beloved husband of Janice Steenburgen for 48 years. He is a graduate of San Juan High School and American River College. Randy served as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Coast Guard from 1968 to 1972. Following his military discharge he attended and graduated from American River College while concurrently owning and operating a Stained Glass Shop on Sutter Street in Old Town Folsom. Randy was both an artist and a mathematician and his careers over his lifetime always involved one or both. He worked as a carpenter, a computer programmer, and lastly, as a violin bow and violin maker, where artistry and mathematics were truly combined into a playable work of art. In 1986, the Violin Society of America awarded Randy the distinguished designation of Hors D'Concours (Master Maker) status as a winner of 3 gold medals for violin bow making. His bows and violins were prized by both players and collectors. He enjoyed a variety of interests including playing guitar and piano, building furniture, lamps, and cabinets. He enjoyed oil painting and charcoals; winning a gold medal at age 11 from the Crocker Art Gallery for a still life painting. He also greatly loved the freedom of cruising in his convertible, especially back roads and out of the way places. He loved keeping up with friends and family by phone, both local, and his many friends across the country (you had to pry the telephone out of his hands). Randy could be opinionated and stubborn, but was also kind and generous. In his final battle in life I learned just how brave he was. He was cherished by his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He is survived by his wife, Janice, his brothers; David Steenburgen and Arlyn Steenburgen and his sisters; Sharon Rudiak, Diana Arinno, Patty Smith, and Gail Barth. Rest in peace, Randy.
