Rafael Garcia Pardell, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018, in Carmichael, California. Born October 25, 1932 and raised in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Phillipines, the son of Jose Pardell & Mercedes Regan, Mr. Pardell resided in Cavite during the occupation of the Phillipines in World War II. After graduating from La Salle High School in 1950, Rafael, his mother Mercedes and sister Nenita emigrated to San Francisco, California. Rafael then served four years in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge. He wed Josefina Perez in 1961 at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Francisco. While attending the University of San Francisco, he played starting fullback for the elite USF soccer program. He graduated from USF in 1966. Rafael enjoyed a long career with the U.S. federal government, first with the Army Corps of Engineers and then with the United States Customs Service where he retired in 1998. He was commended numerous times for superior work performance. He not only took pride in his work, but truly relished the friends he made during his time as a federal employee. Although he settled in Carmichael after retirement, he proclaimed to have left his heart in San Francisco. Mr. Pardell was a kind, generous man and a proud and loving father and grandfather. He loved to walk the American River trails in Carmichael, was a big fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, and a devout member of the Catholic faith. He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Jose & Mimi Pardell; son and daughter-in-law, Ricardo & Geneva Pardell; son and partner, Juan Carlos Pardell & Liz Bermudez; daughter and son-in-law, Gina & Pat Harrold; grandaughters Stephanie Pardell and Tiffany Eng; grandsons, David Pardell and Andrew Eng; great-granddaughter Emma Giang; sister Mercedes Green; brother and sister-in-law, Mike & Kathy Regan; and many close friends and relatives. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church,5057 Cottage Way, Carmichael, CA onMonday, May 21, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donations be sent to the University of San Francisco or the Sacramento Loaves & Fishes.
