It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin James Johnson, who left us unexpectedly on January 23, 2025, at the age of 38. Kevin was born on March 26, 1986, in Sacramento, California, the third son of Lynn and Jeanette Johnson and little brother to Paul and Jacob. He was a protective and inclusive big brother to his sisters who would later join the family: Natalie, Heather, and Tiffany. Kevin lived in Rancho Cordova, California, most of his life, where he was known for his strong work ethic, kind heart, sense of humor, and dedication to family and friends.
Kevin’s life was marked by a deep sense of commitment and service. As a young boy, he participated in Cub Scouts, and later as a teenager achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After his father became severely disabled, Kevin earned his Caregiver Certification to help lift his mother’s burden of caring for Lynn. Kevin often missed family functions and events, regularly using his vacation time from work, and sacrificing his time with family and recreation to care for his father. This service allowed Jeanette much needed respite during the 12 years that she provided care for Lynn.
In his professional life, Kevin waited until the age of 7 years old before finally securing gainful employment helping with the family paper route, personally delivering over 100 papers daily, 7 days a week. This began the foundation of his strong work ethic. As a young man Kevin laid tile with his Uncle Bill and cousins. He later moved into the concrete industry with his cousin Ken as a concrete pumper and boom operator. At the time of his passing, Kevin pumped concrete for Associated Concrete Pumping in both Sacramento and Reno, Nevada. Kevin’s skills and dedication were highly valued by his colleagues. He took great pride in his work, always giving his best and finding fulfillment in the tangible results of his efforts.
Kevin had many hobbies and interests. He loved dogs and was known for convincing family members to adopt rescues. His dogs Maya and Karma held a special place in his heart. Kevin loved bicycling from a young age, and as he grew, he expanded his love of biking to include motorcycles, BMX biking and E-Bikes. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping with his brother and cousins, off-roading in his Ford Bronco, boating, floating the American River, paintballing and shooting. Kevin enjoyed playing video games, especially Halo and Call of Duty. Kevin worked hard on multiple projects in his mother’s home as well as his own. He was innovative and creative in his work. As a devoted 49ers fan, Kevin would find ways to trash talk anyone who wasn’t a fan. He would often purchase anything with the team’s logo on it and then argue that it was necessary for the success of the team.
Beyond his accomplishments, work and hobbies, what truly defined Kevin was his ability to listen without judgement and to love fiercely. No matter the situation he would offer a listening ear to any friend who needed it, creating a space where people could be themselves. His circle of friends is a testament to Kevin’s ability to care for people just the way they are, no matter their strengths or weaknesses. Kevin was the favorite uncle to his 12 nieces and nephews. He spoiled them with gifts and treats whenever he could. He will be missed by his “teammates.”
Kevin is survived by his mother, Jeanette Johnson, and siblings Paul (Shelly) Johnson, Jacob (Sarah) Johnson, Natalie Johnson, Heather (Cole) Roberson, and Tiffany Johnson, his beloved nieces and nephews, Jill, Jacob, Matthew, Lawrence (Tank), Leoma, Annie, Parley, Christian, Henry, Sally, Charlotte, and Nolan; along with many other family members and friends who will remember him for his unwavering loyalty, generosity, and infectious humor. Kevin is preceded in death by his father, Lynn Johnson, his grandparents Paul and Ruth Johnson, and Darrell and Elva Haag. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service to honor Kevin’s life will be held on February 8, 2025 at 11 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3001 Wissemann Drive in Sacramento. The family will greet friends and family an hour prior to the service at the church building.
Final burial will take place at Matthew Kilgore Cemetery in Rancho Cordova, CA on Monday, February 10, 2025 at 1:00pm.
