Karen Lee Kelso, born on February 21, 1958, in Orange, California, passed away peacefully at home on December 13 2024. She was a dedicated and loving individual whose contributions to her community and family will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
Karen had a fulfilling career as an administrative assistant in two warehousing offices in southern New Jersey before relocating to California, where she embraced an entrepreneurial spirit selling Tupperware for a time. Her professional endeavors suited her well, but it was her remarkable volunteer work that truly defined her character.
An enthusiastic and selfless volunteer, Karen gave freely of herself to help others. She was actively involved in numerous organizations and made significant strides in youth leadership through the Boy Scouts of America. Karen completed three adult leadership Wood Badge courses, serving with pride as a member of the Owl patrol. Her commitment to training adult Cub Scout leaders on the Golden Empire Council Training Team exemplified her passion for mentoring others. Additionally, her role as the District Cub Scout Twi-lite Camp director demonstrated her ability to inspire and lead, and she earned the respect and admiration of her peers.
Her community spirit extended beyond scouting; Karen was a devoted member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 169 in Roseville and VFW Auxiliary Post 1487. As a proud Californian, she also joined the Forrest Parlor of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Moreover, her involvement in the Dry Creek 4H club alongside her daughter showcased her dedication to fostering growth and learning in younger generations.
Karen’s love for animals was evident in her life — she cherished the companionship of cats and dogs, often sharing her home with multiple felines. Her whimsical affection for animals even included a particular fondness for the pygmy hippopotamus.
Set apart by her commitment to others, Karen received notable recognition for her volunteer efforts, being awarded the District Award of Merit (Silver Bear) and the Council Award of Merit (Silver Beaver) by the Golden Empire Council, BSA in Sacramento. These honors serve as a testament to her unwavering dedication and the positive impact she had on her community.
Karen is survived by her beloved husband Larry, her sons Andrew and Kenneth, and her daughter Margaret. She also leaves behind her son-in-law Nick, brothers Dale and Kevin, sister Robin, and nephew Phillip. She was preceded in death by her mother Patricia and father Noel Nilsson, as well as her nephew Paul.
In remembering Karen Lee Kelso, we honor her tenacious spirit, her boundless generosity, and the profound love she shared with her family, friends, and community. Her legacy of service and kindness will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she touched.
