Joseph Simon

d. June 23, 2024

Joseph Simon, 92, passed away in Roseville CA on June 23.2024.  He was born in Roseville CA to George & Muriel Simon. He graduated from Roseville High School and received an Associates degree from Placer Junior College, later to become Sierra College. He was a talented athlete, and apparently the “tallest guy in Roseville at 6’8”. He played tight end on RHS’s football team, 1st base and pitched on the baseball team, and one year on the basketball team. When he went to Placer College he was on the baseball and basketball teams.  After college he was drafted by the St Louis Cardinals and was placed on their minor league team “The Grand Forks Chiefs” in North Dakota.  He realized it wasn’t a stable life, so he headed back to California where he applied to Southern Pacific as an Electrician Apprentice. He worked with SP for ten years before moving to work in General Services for the State of California. He was assigned to the State Capitol for 36 years and had the opportunity to work with five governors, beginning with Edmund G Brown, followed by Ronald Reagan, Edmund G. Brown Jr., George Deukmejian, and Pete Wilson.

He met the love of his life, Sue , through the “Sacramento Tip Toppers Club” where a man had to be at least 6’2”, and a woman had to be 5’10” or taller.  They married and spent 61 years together, and had two children, Pete and Scott. Joe was a volunteer as a Cub Scout Leader, on the board and a coach for the Town and Country Little League, a volunteer for Senior Gleaners, Sharing Gods Bounty with St Philomene Church and doing electrical jobs, and St Ignatius Loyola Parish feeding the needy, and doing electrical jobs. He will be missed by all as caring father, grandfather, and friend who had a dry sense of humor, a love of dogs, and a giving heart.

He is preceded in death by his wife Sue, and son Peter, and leaves behind his son Scott (Sue), and two granddaughters; Katie(Alan), Jennifer(Dallas), and a great granddaughter Brooklyn. Services will be held at St Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church on September 7th at 11AM. Donations in his name may be made to “Sharing God’s Bounty” through the office at St Philomene’s Church 2428 Bell Street Sacramento CA 95825.
