Remembering Jeanne Cooper

The mountain lost another beloved daughter with the passing of Jeanne Cooper.

Jeanne moved to Mount Shasta in 1968 with two small children, leading them on quests to discover all the beauty and adventure the mountain had to offer: hiking Castle Crags, biking to the fish hatchery, sledding on Snowman’s Hill, and exploring the swampy trails of the city park.

A devoted wife, Jeanne and her husband, Marty, built, owned, and operated The Tree House. Though Marty treated her like a queen, Jeanne was never one to shy away from hard work, whether it was cleaning hotel rooms, washing dishes, working the front desk, or shoveling snow, she always answered the call. And when winter storms closed the freeway and every hotel in town was full, Jeanne could be found in the Tree House dining room, offering free coffee and handing out pillows and blankets to stranded travelers trying to find a spot on the floor for the night.

In their golden years, Jeanne and Marty retired to Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, where they built a home and cultivated vanilla bean orchids. They also became active members of the Kona Yacht Club, which was a yacht club in name only, since there wasn’t a single boat among all the members.

Following Marty’s death in 2011, Jeanne moved back to the mainland to be closer to her children and grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was being able to expose her family to new experiences, from blind chocolate tastings to overseas travel.

Jeanne passed away at the age of 81 on January 22, 2025. She is survived by her son, Arthur Greene of Las Vegas, NV, and her daughter, Laura Wilkin of Granite Bay, CA, as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Though she is no longer with us in person, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Her love, generosity, and adventurous soul will never be forgotten.
