Herbert John Fischer

October 7, 1925 — October 17, 2017

Our beloved father, Herb passed away on Oct. 17, 2017 at the age of 92. Herb was born in Detroit, Michigan Oct. 7, 1925 to Francis and Helen Fischer. He was raised in Moorhead, Minnesota where he rememberd his Father going to his uncles lumber yard for materials to build a trailer that would take them and all of their possessions to Oregon in 1937. After a short time in Oregon they moved to Fair Oaks, Ca. then to Carmichael. There he met his true love, our mother Phyllis, in 1942 at Scribner’s Fountain shop which is now Serritella’s and they married in 1945. He and mom built their home only a block from where they met in Carmichael and raised their four children. He lived in the house they built for 72 years and always kept it clean and his property perfectly manicured. We would come in his later years to help him and it would soon turn into a wonderful day of working together as a family again. Our father was one of the Greatest Generation, a self-made man who could do anything. Not only did he build his home, he maintained all of his own vehicles and anyone else’s who needed it. He could repair TV’s and do anything electrical, fabricated parts when he needed them, built furniture and even made the family boat to take us water skiing at Folsom Lake. His work career began at Southern Pacific Railroad during the day and then would go to work at Libby’s Cannery and Packaging at night when he was 15 years old. He then went on to work at McClellan AFB for the next 40 years as a Civil Engineer which gave him the opportunity to travel the western United States and as far away as Spain, the Philippines and Viet Nam in the 1960’s where he witnessed the beauty of the land but also sadly the aspects of the war. He gave his children and grandchildren the gift of togetherness and love enjoying years of fishing in the ocean, lakes, and rivers, and camping in the beautiful mountains of California as a family. Though he is gone his family values will always keep us close. Herb was preceded in death by his loving and adored wife, Phyllis, his brothers Bobby, Francis, Leo, Mel and Lynn. He leaves behind his son Rick and daughter-in-law Denise; daughters Illona, Theresa and husband Stan, Beckey and husband Les; Grandchildren Erick(Angie) , Jason(Andrea), Jim and Scott; Great-grandchildren Jacob, MacKenzie and Danicka; and many nieces and nephews. Please join our family for a Celebration of Life Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption, 5057 Cottage Way, Carmichael, Ca. 95608 on Oct. 26, 2017 at 11:00am. Reception and Lunch at the church will follow at 12:00 pm. At 1:30 pm the motorcade will escort those who wish to attend the burial at East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park on 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento.
