Herbert Cano
November 23, 1947 - April 2, 2024
Herbert was born November 23, 1947, in San Francisco, California to Bertha and Manuel Cano. He lived a few years in San Francisco with his parents and brother Samuel before settling in Redwood City. While in Redwood City, his family later welcomed his sister Elizabeth.
Due to numerous boundary changes in the growing community, Herb attended multiple elementary schools within the Redwood City area. He was a very shy boy (hard to believe), so he was given the jobs of leading the Pledge of Allegiance and crossing guard at Henry Ford Elementary School. He took both jobs very seriously. Through the years, he has continued to remain in contact with many of his elementary school friends.
Herb’s first two years of his high school career started at Woodside High School. However, due to more boundary changes he transferred and graduated from Sequoia High School in 1965. He had endless stories of his time at Sequoia. One infamous story included him being the "getaway driver" after a rival event at San Carlos High School. For him, high school was the greatest time.
Herb continued his education at College of San Mateo, earning an Associated in Arts Degree in June of 1968. During this time, he met and began dating the love of his life and future wife, Linda. Soon after, he transferred to San Jose State College to study Marketing where he earned a Bachelor of Science in June of 1970. Herb then continued his education at Santa Clara University where he studied Finance and International Marketing. While concentrating on his studies and courting Linda, they got married on June 19, 1971. Then in August of 1972, he earned a Master in Business Administration.
After receiving his master, his business career began in the San Jose and Palo Alto area branches of Bank of America. He eventually moved up to Bank of America’s World Headquarters in San Francisco. During his time at Bank of America he was selected to be a Governor's Executive Fellow for a year in Sacramento, aiding in public pension funds. He later returned to Bank of America for some time eventually choosing to start his own consulting firm, CAVU Consulting. He was a key project manager and financial consultant to many firms including Hewlett-Packard, Visa, Wells Fargo, and Gridspeak. Herb finally retired in 2014.
Herb's greatest joy was his family. He loved his wife and daughters, Sasha and Rhiana, deeply and was there whenever they needed him. After raising their family in Concord and Clayton, CA. Herb and Linda moved to Roseville, CA to be close to their grandchildren, Barrett and Layton. He loved being able to watch the grandchildren at their sporting events and being involved in their everyday lives.
He was the 'best' at being a friend. Herb enjoyed his weekly Wednesday breakfasts with his group of special long-time Redwood City friends that had reconnected in their new area. His memories of the past were a joy to so many people. Herb loved music and was a constant source for "useless" musical information. He was also a car guy who loved to drive his Corvette, his Datsun 510 and enjoyed car shows in the warmer weather. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed the camaraderie of all age groups. Herb was a jokester who loved to kid around; his laugh will never be forgotten.
On the afternoon of April 2, 2024, Herb passed away as a result of a heart attack with his family by his side. Herb is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Cano, his daughter Rhiana Elise Cano Huiskens, son-in-law Trevor Huiskens and grandchildren, Barrett Lilly Huiskens and Layton Palmer Huiskens. As well as his brother Samuel Cano, sister Elizabeth Cano Aguilar, brother-in-law Francisco Aguilar and brother-in law Richard Low. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sasha Elena Cano, parents Bertha and Manuel Cano, and mother-in law Nedradean Low.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support and love during this difficult time. Donations in his name can be made to the Brain Tumor Foundation at www.braintumorfoundation.org or the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
