Hazel Consuelo Gilman

Carmichael, CA — Hazel Consuelo Gilman, a long-time resident of Carmichael, California, died Sunday, the 4th of November 2018 at her home. Born Consuelo Rodriguez in 1927 in Roseville, CA, Hazel received her high school diploma from Roseville High School in 1945. She continued her education at American River College in the 1970s, earning an Associates Degree in Library Studies. Hazel married James Alvin Gilman (1927-1997) in 1948 and lived in Rocklin, Loomis, and San Mateo before settling in Carmichael in 1960. Hazel first worked at the courthouse in Auburn, and later enjoyed duties as a housewife and raised a family, but was also passionate about her work in the public schools. She worked as a library assistant and librarian at Carmichael Elementary School and Del Dayo Elementary School, and in the library and office of Casa Roble High School. She was also very active with the Senior Gleaners in her retirement. Hazel loved doing anything with her family, which included cooking, going to concerts, going for bike rides, camping, and walking. She cherished holidays with family and attending the activities of her grandchildren. She also traveled to Russia, Canada, and greater parts of the United States with her husband. She is survived by her sons James Martin Gilman and Joseph Alan Gilman, daughter Berta Jean Gilman, daughter-in-law Surinipha Manosan Gilman, grandsons Daniel Martin Keck, Aaron Matthew Keck, Andrew Alvin Gilman, and granddaughter Laila Manosan Gilman. She is also survived by sisters Berta Zentz, Mary Larkin, Dolores Smith, Lydia Henry, brother John Rodriguez, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A memorial service for Hazel Gilman will be held on Monday, November 19 at 1 pm at Sierra View Funeral Chapel, 6201 Fair Oaks Blvd, Carmichael, CA 95608. Memorial gifts may be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.
