Greeta Ann Fletcher

August 13, 1932 — July 31, 2016

Greeta Ann Fletcher was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, in 1932. She was raised on a dairy farm with family 3 sisters and 1 brother, where she crafted her work ethic, humor and sense of adventure. After graduating high school at age 16 as valedictorian, she pursued and obtained her degree in education from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. While in college she met Robert Fletcher, who was heading out to serve his country in the Korean War. Hearing the news that Bob had been wounded in Korea, she began writing letters to him until he returned to the US. They rekindled their relationship after his return, and in 1955 were married in Tomah, Wisconsin. While a devoted educator, she took time away from her career to raise two boys, Craig and Vince during the 1960's, which included moves to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1970, the adventures took them to a small farm in Erie, IL, where she not only raised her kids, she also tended a 1 acre garden and helped raise a variety of animals on the farm. Greeta resumed her career in 1970, teaching 4th grade at Fenton Elementary School, where she continued to educate, entertain and influence students and fellow educators for the next 20 years. Her son Vince was even once a student of hers at Fenton. During the 1980s, Greeta and Bob fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, spending summers there until her retirement. In 1990, they relocated from Illinois to a beachfront home in Oysterville, Washington. Greeta began to nurturing her artistic side, creating beautiful watercolor, charcoal and oil paintings cherished by those fortunate enough to receive one. Her outgoing personality and sense of humor endeared her to many close friends on the Long Beach Peninsula. In the late 2000's, health issues slowed down both Bob and Greeta. In 2007, Greeta was diagnosed with vascular dementia, and in 2010, they relocated to California to be closer to their sons and grandkids. Although Bob passed away shortly after moving, Greeta continued to make residents laugh at her community and was the Karaoke Queen, mesmerizing the caregivers with her voice and the fact that she knew the words to every song. Greeta battled breast cancer for several years until the summer of 2016. On July 31, 2016, she embarked on her final adventure as she peacefully slipped away, surrounded by her sons and in the thoughts of many. Greeta will be interred with her husband, Bob, In Arlington National Cemetery, on October 12, 2016. A fitting place for our national treasure.
