He was born in Great Falls, Montana to Frederick S. Knisley and Margaret Hawkins Knisley on June 7, 1927. At the age of five he and his parents moved to Citrus Heights California. Fred graduated from San Juan High School in 1946 and worked for a short time in his father's newly opened Sylvan Lumber. He served in the Merchant Marines and also in the Army. Later he began his over 40-year career as a lumber grader- mostly in Northern California, although he worked in both Montana and Idaho for a time in the 1960's. While he worked in a lumbar mill in Southern California he met his wife, Margaret Sanchez (deceased). He brought his soon to be bride back to northern California, bought a house in Shingle Springs and worked for the Lumbar Mill in Camino until his retirement. After he was widowed he moved to Vintage Oaks Apartments in Citrus Heights where he lived for more than twenty years. Even though he was 90 years old he rode his bicycle everyday and was very proud of it. In July of 2017 he had a bicycle accident and broke his hip among other injuries and in October had to move into a care home. He missed riding to the Starbucks Coffee Shop on Auburn Blvd., everyday visiting with his friends. Fred is predeceased by his parents, wife, sister, and brother-in-law Beula and John Vann, and step-mother, Nancy Knisley.
