Edwin “Ed” Geerling, age 63, passed away peacefully following a brief battle with cancer on September 21, 2018, at his home in Sacramento, CA, with his family at his bedside. Ed is survived by his loving wife Joyce, daughters Jessica Leigh Atkinson and Hannah Christine Geerling, and son-in-law Jamar Dennis Lee Atkinson, his beautiful granddaughter Jessah Leigh- Marie Atkinson, and siblings Marion Dixon and Marcella Von Schiedermann. Also survived by niece Amber Carter-Ott, Maya Taryn, Jacara Thompson, and nephew Verner Dixon as well as many great niece’s and nephew’s. Ed was born on December 28, 1954, in Amsterdam, Holland to Wilhelmus Antonius Geerling and Susanna Maria Lamers. Ed acquired his education throughout various countries abroad and several states. After a five-year courtship, he married the love of his life, Joyce McCormack in 1988. In 1991, the couple welcomed their first beautiful daughter Jessica, and six years later welcomed their second beautiful daughter Hannah into their lives. Ed was a dedicated father who set about teaching his girls how to be honest, caring, and independent. He was very involved in his children’s activities, serving as assistant coach for basketball and softball teams, videographer for dance recitals, etc. His daughters remember him as a fun, loving, involved, and brilliant father who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams and provided them the tools to do so. In the mid 80’s, Ed began working as an independent contractor remodeling various downtown Sacramento office buildings, including Brannan’s Bar & Grill, River City Bank, and 11th & L Properties. In 1991, Ed landed a full-time position as a Stationary Engineer for 11th and L Properties, where he worked for over 20 years. His last accomplishment prior to retirement was the design and construction of the fireplace at Chicory Coffee & Tea in downtown Sacramento. Ed was accomplished at carpentry, music (guitar and piano), and repairing just about anything, and exhibited these skills daily. He was a generous, funny, intelligent individual who loved his family and the Lord and who was passionate about music, current events, and the latest technology. He was an active and dedicated member of the NRA. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Weds., October 17, 2018, at 11 am, at Sierra View Funeral Chapel, 6201 Fair Oaks Blvd., Carmichael. There will be a Repast reception immediately following at the VFW Hall at 7576 Stockton Blvd. Sacramento, CA. Pastor Joseph S. Sissac and Pastor Wayne Kirkling will officiate the services. All are welcome to attend both the life celebration and reception, and are encouraged to enjoy food and share memories celebrating Ed’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to their home church: Center of Praise Ministries located at 2223 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95816. Lastly, the family thanks the Center of Praise Ministries for their loving support, guidance, compassion, dedication, and assistance with the planning of the Celebration of Life for Edwin.
