Daniel Arthur Moon

August 13, 1920 — May 11, 2017

Daniel A. Moon, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, at the age of 96 went peacefully to be with the Lord. Betty, his wife of 68 years, had preceded him in death by six years. Daniel was born to Grover and Anna Moon in Greenwich CT. As a boy, he was interested in airplanes. He also was especially good at drawing pictures of horses and liked to dress up like a cowboy. As a teenager, Daniel could be very determined. For example, when he was working on a farm, he once walked 10 miles into town in order to watch a Western movie and then walked all the way back. After he graduated from high school, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). At age 20, he was trained as a machinist but was still interested in airplanes. In 1941, his friend Charlie invited him to come to L.A. Daniel quit a good job and traveled to L.A. by himself with the hope of getting into aviation. On the way out, the attack on Pearl Harbor was broadcast on the radio. Daniel went to stay at the boarding house with Charlie. The boarding house happened to be owned by Betty’s father. While living there, he began dating Betty. They were married in 1942. Daniel joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and became a belly gunner on a B-17 bomber. While in training, his plane caught fire and he and the rest of his crew parachuted out safely. He later flew bombing missions over Northern Italy during WWII. After the war, Daniel got a number of jobs in the aircraft industry which was his dream. Daniel became a born again Christian during this time of his life. Betty had become a Christian earlier in her high school years. They later moved to Sacramento and he worked at McClellan AFB for 31 years and retired from there in 1983. Over the years, Dan and Betty had five children, Edith, Donald, Ruth, Martha, and Timothy. Daniel set an excellent example for his children in his simple, clean, Christ-like way of life. He trusted and believed in the Lord Jesus. He did not smoke or drink or ever use bad language. He did not murmur or complain. All five children followed his example and became believers as well. After he retired, he planned an extensive trip around the U.S. He and Betty greatly enjoyed this trip as they traveled in their RV with their dog, Scruffy. They lived in Pollock Pines for 22 years where they hosted many family gatherings, when especially the grandchildren enjoyed the evergreen forest and winter snow. In 2009, as their health began to decline, they moved back to Carmichael into the same home where their children grew up. Into his early 90s, Daniel continued to attend church and go on outings to air shows and museums with family.
