Allan Martin Friedman

d. February 4, 2023

Allan Martin Friedman passed away on February 4, 2023, following complications from heart surgery.  He is survived by his wife Susan, of nearly 47 years; his three children – Margaret, Abby and Ben, son-in-law Ty, granddaughters Charlotte and Caroline, daughter-in-law Julie, and grandsons Joseph, and Michael. He is also survived by his sisters Marcia Friedman and Paula Rann. Margaret, Ben and Julie stayed by his side during his final moments.

Allan was born March 26, 1954, in New York to David and Miriam Friedman. He was raised in the Bronx, New York then came to California in his early twenties hoping to pursue a career in mental health. While his initial career goals changed over time, he was always committed to helping others and spent many years working with the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers as an IT professional. He was very proud of his work and committed to advocacy for mental health and people with disabilities.

At home, Allan was an avid reader and loved to spend mornings in his backyard with his most current book from the local library. In his younger days, he would bike around the Berkeley hills and after moving to Sacramento, within the foothills around Auburn. He was also a football fan and would rarely miss any games, especially those of his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers.

Being a grandpa was Allan’s greatest joy. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether he was teaching Joseph how to play chess, working in his yard with helper Michael, playing games with Charlotte, or taking Caroline to the park to care for her stick library. He loved movies, especially Monty Python and Mel Brooks films and passed this love of film onto his children. He was also a huge fan of Jeopardy and would watch most nights while texting with his daughter about the latest super champ.

Allan will be deeply missed by us all.

A celebration of life service will be held Sunday March 26 from 11am-2pm at
