Al Newman

Al came on board 26 June 1932 in Portsmouth, NH, the son of John J. and Arlene (Pio) Newman. He sailed over the horizon in Citrus Heights, CA on June 1, 2023. Al served on the destroyer USS AMMEN (DD527) during the Korean War. Al graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1958. He taught French, Spanish and History for 40 years. He retired for the first time in 1988 and moved to a remote corner of Guatemala, where he entered the used clothing business. He returned to California in 1992 and substitute taught, retiring for a second time in 2003. Al wrote two novels and a comprehensive genealogy, which were published online. Over the years, Al visited over 60 countries. He was an ardent genealogist from age 14 until his final day. Al was predeceased by his wife Cecilia Gilbert Newman, in 2014 and his eldest son Danny Newman, in 2010. Al is survived by his longtime companion, Marga Thrasher; his daughter, Gael Graysen; his son, Brady Newman and his wife, Laura Newman; his daughter, Kerry Lawrence and several grandchildren: Dawn Furtado, David Newman, Catherine Newman, Evan Lawrence, Steven Newman and several great-grandchildren.
